A CAMINHO DO ATLANTICO

E bom visitar Oaxaca se estiver planejando viajar fora das estradas principais com o proposito de ver belas paisagens de rios e cachoeiras. Mas, como esse nao e o caso dos viajantes a tratar, seguiu-se o plano de passar somente 2 dias na regiao. O basico a fazer na area e visitar as ruinas do Monte Alban, o maior centro urbano descoberto, e dirigir um pouco mais ate Mitla para ver sua piramide.

De la, o casal dirigiu por Orizaba, uma cidade com ar acolhedor e rua principal onde muitas pessoas caminhavam ate bem tarde. O vulcao ativo Orizaba e uma visao espetacular e vantagem de se viver na area. Ha passeios com veiculos 4X4 que levam visitantes para observar animais e plantas silvestres nas redondezas do vulcao... algo que os dois terao qe deixar para mais tarde, ja que tem economizado porque sua longa viagem so esta no inicio.

Comecaram a dirigir ate a cidade Veracruz para uma parada de descanco rapida que incluiu nado no oceano Atlantico e tambem numa piscina de um hotel de luxo frente a praia.

Continuaram a cidade de Campeche. O lugar nao os cativou inicialmente, porem, assim que alcancaram a vizinhanca certa e avistaram a catedral iluminada, a praca perto do oceano onde pessoas corriam, faziam exercicio e namoravam, mudaram de ideia. As casas assobradadas e conectadas umas as outras assemelham-se as de Sao Francisco, nos E.U.A.

De la, foram visitar uma armadilha turistica chamada Chiche Itza. Estas piramides e ruinas sao bonitas e imperdiveis historicalmente, mas tambem uma atracao cara (estacionamento 22 pesos - mas e possivel estacionar do lado de fora - entrada 166 pesos) e ha muitos artesaos maias tentando vender seu belo trabalho. Cavernas estao por todo o local, mas Deb e Pat ficaram muito tempo em Chiche Itza fazendo com que o tempo se esgotasse e nao pudessem visita-las. Isso foi tudo com relacao ao estado de Yucatan.

Agora o casal esta em Cancun, onde ficarao o dia todo e ir ao consulado na segunda-feira (25/out/2010) para pegar um visto para Debora. De cancun, o plano e encontrar alguns cenotes e talvez mergulhar em Playa del Carmen antes de deixar o Mexico.

DICAS

- tire proveito de seu visual de turista para invadir piscinas sem levantar suspeitas
- durma no carro sempre que puder e achar que e seguro para economizar centenas de pesos

DESCABELOS

- eles dormiram no carro em Cancun (quarto dia seguido) e comecou a chover, por isso tiveram as janelas nao puderam ficar abertas o que causou um calor incessante = pessima noite de sono + roupas de cama e colchao molhados

- a caixa eletronica do Banamex nao funcionou a maioria do dia quase causando o esgotamento de dinheiro

P.S.: NAO TEM CONSULADO DE BELIZE EM CANCUN OU CHETUMAL, MAS SE PODE PEGAR VISTO FACILMENTE AO CRUZAR A FRONTEIRA NO SETOR DE IMIGRACAO DE BELIZE

TOWARDS THE ATLANTIC

Oaxaca is a nice place to spend time if you are planning on driving off the main roads to find stunning views and culture.  The travelers spent only a couple of days there visiting Monte Alban (the oldest large city ruins around) and driving a little further to Mitla to see this town's ruins as well.

From there they drove through Orizaba which had a warm feeling to it, a big main street where lots of people walked up and down till late at night.  The giant active volcano is stunning.  From Orizaba they drove to Veracruz for a quick stop and rest, which included getting in the atlantic ocean followed by a swim in a deluxe beach front hotel swimming pool.  Between Veracruz and Villa Hermosa they drove beautiful isolated coastlines, including an awesome winding road around volcano San Martin, with a night spent in the town of Catemaco.

They continued along to the city of Campeche, which seemed unappealing at first, but as soon as they reached the right part of town and saw the lit cathedrals, plazas by the ocean, and lively atmosphere, their impression changed.  Some of the streets and buildings resembled those found in USA's San Francisco.
From there they went to a tourist trap called Chiche Itza.  These historic pyramids and ruins are beautiful but expensive (parking 22 pesos, admittance fee 166 pesos) and there are many persistent local artists trying to sell their beautiful work.  Cenotes are also abundant here.

The couple is now in Cancun, where they will spend the full day today relaxing and going to the Belize consulate on Monday (25/0ct/2010) to get a visa for Debora.  From Cancun they are planning to visit some cenotes and may go diving at Playa Del Carmen before exiting Mexico.

TRICKS
- take advantage of your gringo appearance to poach swimming pools unsuspectedly
- sleep in the car whenever you can if it's safe and save hundreds of pesos


TROUBLES
- they slept in the car in Cancun (4th day in a row) but it started pouring therefore the windows couldn't stay open and they were very hot = not good night of sleep + wet sleeping gear
- Banamex atm machine didn't work one day (don't know why) so they almost ran out of pesos.

CENTRO DOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DO MEXICO

O caminho para o centro do Mexico trouxe uma agradavel mudanca de temperatura. Ainda sem ar condicionado, foi bom estar em uma altitude elevada com ar mais frio. Ao entrar em Guadalajara o trafego de carros era muito, assim como toda cidade grande. As areas do centro das cidades ate agora tem tido ruas estreitas de sentido unico o que provoca transito ainda mais lento. Apesar disso, Guadalajara e um lugar bonito e vale a pena visitar o cemiterio Panteon Guadalajara. Cidades menores ao seu redor tambem sao atraentes e tem menos transito. Chapala, por exemplo, esta localizada cerca de 50 Km ao sul e as margens de um lago imenso. Essa cidadezinha charmosa tem calcadoes com palmeiras onde pessoas vendem comida e roupas em suas tendas e bandas mexicanas tocam quando requisitadas.

Depois de passar a noite em um motel, Debora e Pat partiram para Cholula as 8 da manha e pararam em Morelia para reabaster, usar a internet, comer e comprar mais pesos. Morelia e a capital de Michoacan e o trafego e tao ruim quanto o de Guadalajara, por isso, o melhor e estacionar e fazer o que tiver que fazer a pe.

Na estrada segura de pedagios, quase nao se percebeu a passagem pela fronteira com o estado do Mexico. Mas as coisas mudaram ao cruzar com o Distrito Federal. Assim que pagaram o pedagio um carro da policia federal os seguiu e parou. O policial tinha uma cara contente pois ja sabia que iria fazer uma grana extra com os gringos com carro de placas da California. De acordo com o policial, veiculos indo ao D.F. devem ter um tipo de inspecao contra fungos e uma infracao estava em ordem. Depois de quase 30 minutos de resistencia, o casal finalmente pagou a estorcao e saiu do D.F. por uma rota alternativa, ironicamente sugerida com simpatia pelo mesmo policial.

Foi prazeroso avistar as belas casas de Cuernavaca depois de dirigir por muitos povoados e estradas perigosas e suspeitas em terreno montanhoso. AInda havia algumas horas para alcancar Cholula quando a noite comecou a cair. Era a primeira vez que teriam que dirigir a noite, entao estavam um pouco preocupados. Contudo, a estrada depois de Cuernavaca mostrou-se bem movimentada e pareceu segura. Finalmente, depois de uma longa viagem de 14 horas, chegaram a Cholula (perto de uma moderna cidade grande chamada Puebla) e ficaram na casa de sua amiga Jen.

Na manha seguinte, os tres fizeram uma caminhada de mais de 1.000 metros verticais ate o topo do vulcao La Malinche, o qual tem elevacao maior do que Mt. Whitney nos E.U.A e a sexta maior do Mexico a 4.461 mt.

Esta segunda-feira foram trabalhar com sua hospedeira, que e uma conservadora na Grande Piramide de Cholula. Ela tem trabahado na conservacao de pinturas na parede interna da piramide de cerca de 1.800 anos e nao estao abertas ao publico, portanto foi uma experiencia especial e rara de se ter.

Amanha de manha - 19/Out/2010 - eles irao para Oaxaca por dois dias e depois partir para Yucatan, ao leste do pais.

DICAS

- certifique-se de obter a permissao de auto necessaria ate mesmo antes de pensar em cruzar o D.F.

- coloque um adesivo da Virgem Maria na janela traseira de seu veiculo

- Debora esta com uma dor de estomago forte por razoes ate agora desconhecidas.

- perca de dinheiro por causa de policial corrupto

- desperdicio de gas e tempo por causa de transito e por se perderem no caminho

CENTRAL UNITED STATES OF MEXICO

Heading into central Mexico brought a nice change of climate.  Still without air conditioning, it was good to be at a higher altitude region with cooler air. When entering Guadalajara traffic was bad as in any other big city.  The downtown areas so far have had one-way narrow streets that make traffic even slower.  Despite that, it is a nice place and the cemetery Panteon Guadalajara is worth visiting.  The smaller surrounding towns are also nice and have less traffic.  Chapala for instance is located about 35 miles south of Guadalajara on the shore of a huge lake.  This charming small city has sidewalks with palm trees where people sell food and clothing from tents, and mexican bands play at request.

After spending the night in a motel, Debora and Pat left for Cholula at 8 a.m. with a stop in Morelia to get gas, food, check out the city, use the internet, and buy some pesos.  Morelia is the capital of Michoacan, and its traffic is as bad as Guadalajara's, therefore it is best to park your car and walk around to get stuff done.

On the safe toll road, the border into Mexico state was almost unnoticed.  But things changed when crossing into D.F..  After leaving the toll booth they were followed and stopped by a federal police car.  The cop had a happy face already because he knew he was gonna make some extra money from the gringos with the California plates.  According to the cop, cars crossing into D.F. must have a sort of fumigation inspection, and an infraction was in order.  After almost 30 minutes of resistance, the couple finally paid a bribe and headed out of D.F. taking an alternate way to Cholula, which ironically was explained to them in a very friendly and helpful manner by the same cop.

The nice houses of the town of Cuernavaca were very pleasant to see after driving through many small villages and shady winding roads through mountainous terrain.  There were still a few hours left to reach Cholula when night started to fall.  It was the first time the couple would be driving during the night, so they were a bit concerned.  However, the roads after Cuernavaca ended up being well travelled and seemed safe.  Finally, after their long 14 hour drive, they arrived in downtown Cholula (close to a modern big city called Puebla) and stayed with a friend named Jen.

The next morning the three of them hiked approximately 4,000 vertical feet to the top of nearby volcano La Malinche, which has a higher elevation than Mt. Whitney in the USA, and is the 6th highest in Mexico at 14,646 ft. 

On Monday they went to work with their hostess, who happens to be a conservator at The Great Pyramid of Cholula.  She has been working to conserve 1,800 year old wall paintings at the site that is not open to the public, so it was a special and rare experience to have.

Tomorrow morning - 19/Oct/2010 - they will leave to Oaxaca for two days then head east to Yucatan.

- get your fumigation permit before even thinking about going to D.F.

- get a Virgen Maria sticker for your car rear window

TROUBLES

- Debora got a painful stomachache, unknown reasons so far

- loss of money due to bribing corrupt cop

- wasting gas and time by getting lost and stuck in traffic a few times.

They made it to the very top

4 DIAS ADENTRO

Nossos viajantes cruzaram a fronteira dos EUA com o Mexico com sucesso. Eles estavam preparados com visto, passaportes e todas as licencas necessarias.

O governo mexicano requere que estrangeiros visitando o pais facam um registro no dia de chegada. Isso e preciso, principalmente se estiver viajando de carro, porque oficiais da imigracao e a policia federal e municipal certificam-se de que toda a documentacao esta correta.

A primeira parada de Pat e Debora foi na cidade de San Carlos, aproximadamente 500 Km ao sul da fronteira. "San Carlos ainda nao parece muito mexicana. Tem arquitetura e gente mexicana, mas tambem se ve muitos turistas americanos e canadenses. E um lugar para gente rica", afirmam os viajantes. "Praticamente so tem mansoes e condominios luxuosos com praias particulares", adicionam.

Eles sentiram seguranca e ficaram satisfeitos com a beleza de San Carlos e dizem que o unico problema e que nao e possivel dirigir ate grande parte da orla por causa dos condominios fechados do local.

Os dois passaram a noite em seu carro num estacionamento de hotel porque pareceu seguro e assim o foi. Dormiram muito bem e ninguem tentou roubar o veiculo.

Na manha seguinte a viagem continuou com 9h na estrada ate Mazatlan onde jantaram e encontraram um  motel consideravelmente barato, com garagem coberta. Moteis nessa area sao quartos alugados de 8 a 12h, diferentemente dos EUA que sao a mesma coisa que hoteis, mas relativamente menores. Os moteis de Mazatlan tem garagem coberta e sao convenientes para descansar a noite e partir pela manha.

12 horas e 220 pesos mexicanos depois, era hora de visitar as praias de Mazatlan antes de continuar ate La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Amigos de Pat os receberam em La Cruz. Eles sao pessoas que trabalham para uma organizacao sem fins lucrativos chamada Peace. Esta educa familias locais que precisaram se relocar de suas vilas para ceder lugar a construcoes de mansoes multimilionarias.

Eles visitaram praias do local, comeram tacos, beberam margaritas e tambem decidiram para onde ir dali.

Originalmente, o plano era dirigir pela costa cenica ate Acapulco, mas depois de ficar nas cidadezinhas praieiras por dias e perguntar pela opiniao de pessoas locais, decidiram dirigir pela regiao central do Mexico. "Nas cidades litoraneas ha muitos turistas americanos e nos prefeririamos ver mais influencia mexicana do que estrangeira enquanto estivermos aqui", nos contam.

O casal tem dirigido somente durante os dias por uma questao de seguranca. Eles partirao amanha de manha - 15/out/2010 - e Guadalajara, Cidade do Mexico e Cholula provavelmente estarao em sua rota

4 DAYS DEEP

Our travelers have crossed the boarder USA/MEX successfully. They were prepared with visas, passports and all permits needed.

The mexican government requires that foreigners visiting the country register their day of entrance. You need that, mainly when driving, because the check point officers, federales and policia will ask for them.

Pat and Debora first stop was at the town of San Carlos, nearly 300 miles south of the border. 

"San Carlos still doesn't seem very Mexican. It has Mexican architecture and Spanish speaking workers, but you see a lot of tourists from the USA and Canada. It is a place for rich people", state the travelers. "Basically the only type of housing is mansions and luxurious condos with private beaches", they add.

Both felt very safe and satisfied with the beauty of San Carlos and say that the only down side is that driving to a lot of the beaches is not possible because of the many gated communities around.

They spent the night in the car at a hotel's parking lot because it seemed safe and so it was. They had a great night of sleep and no one tried to break in.

In the morning the trip continued with a long 9h drive to Mazatlan where they had dinner and found an inexpensive, covered garage motel to spend the night at. Motels in this area are places rented every 8 to 12h, differently than the ones in the USA. They have covered garages and come in handy if you are staying overnight to rest and leave early.
12h and 220 mexican pesos later, it was time to check out the beaches in Mazatlan before heading to La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.
At  La Cruz they stayed with Pat's friends who moved to Mexico to work for a nonprofit organization called Peace. They work with education of local people who needed to relocate so multimillionaire mansions could be built where their villages used to be.
They visited beaches in the area, ate tacos, drank margaritas, and also decided where they are going next.
Initially the plan was to drive on the scenic coast until Acapulco, but after staying on the beach towns for days and seeking local's opinions, they decided to drive through central Mexico.  "At the beach towns there are a lot of american tourists and we would rather see more mexican than foreign influence while here", they tell us. 

The couple has been driving during the days only for a matter of safety. They will leave tomorrow morning - 15/Oct/2010 - and Guadalajara, Mexico City and Cholula are probably on the route they will take.

CRUZANDO AS AMERICAS

So uma resumida para informar a todos do que isso se trata.

Essa e uma pagina da internet sobre a viagem que Pat e Debora farao, de carro, da California, EUA, ate Sao Paulo, BRA. E sobre tudo o que esta se passando com eles, como e cruzar as fronteiras, conhecer novas pessoas, estar envoltos em culturas diferentes, etc, etc.

A meta e visitar todos os paises das Americas do Norte, Central e do Sul (infelizmente sem incluir o Canada, ahhhhh :S) e chegar ao Brasil ate fevereiro de 2011 com o orcamento que tem - e isso e um segredo, se eu falar eles provavelmente serao sequestrados...brincadeirinha.

Espero  que voces se sintam no banco trazeiro do carro ao ler as atualizacoes dessa aventura.
Talvez nao seja tao facil escrever frequentemente, mas o esforco sera feito.

CROSSING THE AMERICAS

Just a quick start to let everyone know what this is gonna be about.

This website is about Pat and Debora's road trip from California, USA, to Sao Paulo, BRA. How everything is going with them, how it is to cross all the boarders, meet new people, be around a variety of cultures, etc etc.

The goal is to go to every country in North, Central and South Americas (unfortunately not including Canada, booooo :S) and get to Brazil up till Feb 2011 with the budget they have - and that's a secret, if I say it they'll probably get kidnapped...just kidding.

I hope you feel like you are on the back seat of the car as you follow the updates on this adventure.
It might not be easy to write too often, but the effort will be made.

IT'S TODAY

Pat and Debora are gonna start their long awaited road trip from San Diego, USA, to Sao Paulo,BRA.
After spending almost 1 week at Pat's parents house playing and eating - joking, they also organized and did a lot of research for the upcoming journey - they finally woke up to reality and are about to start their trip.
In a few minutes they'll start driving to Arizona close to the boarder with Mexico where they'll spend the night. As soon as the sun comes up in the morning (10/10/10) they'll cross the Mexican boarder headed to a beach town called San Carlos (that's a place seemingly safe to hang out and rest).They will be there until the following morning then leave to Mazatlan.

Let's hope they have Internet access soon to let us know how it went.

Debora e Pat comecarao sua viagem tao esperada dos EUA ate o BRA hoje.
Depois de ficarem quase 1 semana na casa dos pais do Pat, passeando e comendo :D - brincadeira; tambem fizeram muita pesquisa e organizacao-, decidiram tomar vergonha na cara e comecar a viagem.
Daqui alguns minutos, partirao da California ate perto da fronteira do Arizona com o Mexico. Eles irao passar a noite la e acordar assim que o sol nascer para cruzar a fronteira e, dali, continuar ate a cidade San Carlos - uma cidadezinha do litoral que parece segura e boa para relaxar.
Ficarao la so ate a manha seguinte (11/out/2010) partindo depois para Mazatlan.
Tomara que eles tenham acesso a internet logo, logo, para poder nos contar o que aconteceu.
